I accept a limited number of students for private writing instruction. This highly individualized course of study is best suited for the writer who wants to work closely with a mentor through multiple revisions and/or several writing projects. Unless specifically requested, all communication is done through email, so it does not matter where you live.
Why engage a writing tutor/mentor?
Many writers, both aspiring and experienced, find it difficult to work in isolation, day after day, without feedback. A private instructor offers honest criticism with suggestions on how to improve. This close working relationship fosters trust, respect, and creativity.
Who decides to pursue private study?
Writers of all experience levels and abilities can reach a point in their writing career when they need the extra guidance of an objective but caring mentor. Some are struggling with writer’s block. Others feel that they have reached a plateau and cannot move past the invisible barrier that keeps them from getting better. Still others are grappling with the complexity of writing itself. They all share a common goal: to improve as quickly as possible.
Why not hire a private teacher?
The obvious answer is finances, since such a relationship can be costly. Not everyone can afford the luxury of a private instructor. Beyond this, however, there may be other issues. Some writers cannot weather criticism of their work. Since my goal is to improve my students’ writing by pointing out weaknesses and since every piece of writing contains flaws, a writer hoping for raves will be disappointed. Also, many writers don’t have the time or the inclination to devote themselves to their writing on a regular basis.
Why me?
I am both a published writer and a professional educator. Not all writers are good teachers, and not all teachers are good writers. With me, you get both.
Of course, personalities sometimes conflict, even in professional relationships. For that reason, I do not require my students to sign a contract or to commit to a minimum number of hours. You may choose to end our relationship at any time.
